If it’s time to upgrade or replace your washer and dryer, there are a few things you should know before taking the leap into that laundry basket. Appliances have changed. So, if it has been a while since you purchased your last set, or if this is the first washer and dryer you have ever purchased, you will have questions.
Will you need a large capacity model? Do you prefer front or top load? Gas or electric? What features and options do you need? How important is energy efficiency to you? Do you want a specific color? Do you need only a washer? Only a dryer?
Here is a guide to help you make the decision that is best for you:
Washers
Washers come in two distinct variations; top load and front load. Besides the obvious ways to load them, there are several other differences that might help you in making your own choice.
Top Load
- Generally more affordable than front-load models.
- If you have mobility issues, a top load does not force you to bend over to load and unload the machines.
- Because water evaporates, you do not have the odors, mold, or mildew that you sometimes have in a front load washer.
- Top loads are compatible with all detergents. Front-load machines may require certain types.
- Although top load machines have become more energy-efficient, they still use more energy than their front load counterparts.
- Agitator models which tend to be less expensive and more readily available are harder on clothes and sometimes tangle.
- They can also be louder than a front loader.
Front Load
- Front-load machines are harder on the back but can be purchased with pedestals to alleviate mobility issues.
- Front-loaders can be stacked for tighter spaces. They also allow for countertop space whereas a top-loader does not.
- Water use is decreased, and the machines are more energy-efficient.
- These machines are gentler on clothes and tend to get clothes cleaner.
- Because there is no agitator, larger loads can be handled.
Washer Features To Consider
Sometimes the features you want and those that you need aren’t exactly the same. It’s important to determine the best way this washer will be used. Think about the size of the family and the size of the loads. Do you do large loads often for things like comforters or rugs? Do you wash often for children or handle clothes that need extra care? A few additional points to consider:
- Digital displays come on many high-end models. You can look at the indicator lights to see your progress in your current cycles.
- Detergent dispensing is a great feature that evenly dispenses your detergent instead of you pouring it all into the drum. Some machines will even dispense pods.
- Energy-efficient models are available in both top and front load. Look for models rated between A and C to save money. These models usually offer different settings for capacity, temperatures, and lengths of cycles.
- Wi-Fi enabled machines are not a thing for the future. By using your smartphone, you can stop or start a load, or remotely troubleshoot any mechanical issues.
Dryers
After your clothes are done getting cleaned in the wash, the next step would be drying them! But when it comes to a dryer, which do you choose? Gas or electricity? Although both options get the job done, there are a few key differences. Let’s take a look:
Electric Dryers
- Electric dryers have a greater selection of models
- Usually have a lower upfront cost
- Some options have a steam function to minimize wrinkles
- Low-maintenance
- Repairs are more affordable
- Check out one of our favorites, the GE7.2 cu ft Front Loading Electric Dryer.
Gas Dryers
- Gas Dryers are usually more cost-effective and provide savings over the long run
- Typically use a standard electrical outlet
- Usually dries the laundry in about half the time of electric dryers
Dryer Features To Consider
As mentioned above, some dryers include a steam option which reduces wrinkles and can help remove stains. Some machines use steam to disinfect your clothes as well. The steam cycle can require an additional hookup behind the dryer or the water may need to be added manually.
As an added bonus, some dryers even include the ability to remotely start the job so your clothes are dry and wrinkle-free when you get home. You can even ask Alexa if the dryer is done! Check out the LG 7.4 cu ft 12-cycle gas dryer with steam, smart Wi-Fi, and built-in Intelligence, your dryer will have all the bells and whistles you’ve been wanting.
High-Efficiency Models
The final thing to consider is a high-efficiency washer or dryer. The appliance must meet specific criteria concerning water, electricity, and detergent use. When it comes to washers, most high-efficiency models are front load washers. However, there are some top-load machines, with a shorter agitator or without an agitator that qualify such as the GE 5.2 Cu Ft 10 Cycle High-Efficiency Top Loading Washer. For High-efficiency dryers, rotating speeds can be much higher, therefore drying clothes faster while using less energy. High-efficiency appliances will be clearly marked with the HE symbol.

It is awesome that front-load washing and drying machines are good for tighter spaces because they can be stacked. My husband and I are moving to an apartment that has only a closet for our washer and dryer. We’ll definitely have to invest in front-load machines so we can stack them in that closet and save space.
